Slocum’s Garden Club brings new life to Ryan’s Garden

This spring, third, fourth and fifth grade members of the Edith L. Slocum Elementary School’s Garden Club came together to beautify and revitalize Ryan’s Garden. Guided by teacher Mrs. Agostini, Speech Language Pathologist Mrs. Leigh and Principal John Delio, students rolled up their sleeves to plan, plant and refresh the space while learning about landscaping and teamwork.
Ryan’s Garden serves as a special tribute to former Slocum student Ryan Ruckdeschel who passed away in 1997 as a result of a progressive neurological disease called Adrenoleukodystrophy. Following the garden’s dedication in his memory, Ryan’s family remained closely connected to the space. His mother regularly visited the school to tend the garden and plant new flowers, helping it flourish for many years. The Garden Club’s revitalization project continues that tradition of care, ensuring Ryan’s legacy remains a meaningful part of the Slocum community.
The installation effort was coordinated by Jeff Porrini of SiteOne Landscape Supply, who worked alongside Garden Club students throughout the project, helping bring their vision for Ryan’s Garden to life. The garden’s revitalization was made possible through the generosity of several community partners. Nicolock Paving Stones, through representative Kurt Smith, donated the pavers used in the project, while Infinity Stones LLC, led by Alberto Contreras, provided discounted installation services. SiteOne Landscape Supply contributed plants, irrigation materials, benches, birdbaths, planters and other finishing touches.
Through their efforts, students not only enhanced the beauty of the school grounds but also helped preserve an importance piece of Slocum’s history, ensuring Ryan’s legacy continues to bloom for future generations.
