Science Symposium stirs excitement at Idle Hour

Idle Hour Elementary turned into a hub for hands-on discovery as second graders stepped into the role of young scientists during the school’s second annual Science Symposium.
Members of Connetquot High School’s Science National Honor Society partnered with their younger peers to lead a series of interactive experiments. Students rotated through several stations, including “milk magic,” where they experimented with food coloring in liquid, and tested chemical reactions with homemade volcanoes. They also learned about the human skeletal system, creating models out of paper and Play-Doh, and made their own slime. At another station, students learned about the butterfly life cycle by using different pasta shapes to represent each stage on a divided paper plate, then created colorful butterflies using coffee filters.
The event was a big success, connecting young learners with high school mentors in an immersive celebration of science.
