Connetquot High School students hear powerful WWII stories from visiting veteran

Private First-Class Armand Tarantelli visited Connetquot High School to share with students his experience of being drafted into the U.S. Army shortly after graduating high school during World War II.
He served as a member of the Military Police in the 14th Armored Division and took part in the liberation of Germany. Now 100 years old, Armand vividly retold stories from his honorable service, including operating a Sherman tank without any ear protection. Students enrolled in the Military History: Studies in World Conflict elective had the opportunity to ask him questions about his service and experiences.
Students were moved as Armand described his role in helping liberate the Dachau concentration camp in Germany and the condition of the survivors he encountered. He explained that those held in the camps barely survived on daily rations that often consisted of only a small crust of bread. One of his most dangerous assignments involved patrolling a minefield to scout for Nazi soldiers.
Students listened intently as Armand shared stories of arresting Nazi prisoners of war and escorting them to jail. In addition to receiving an honorable service award, he was recently recognized by the French government with a distinguished service honor. Students thanked him for his service and presented him with a plaque in recognition of his contributions.
After returning from the war, Armand raised his family in Hicksville and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from New York University. He went on to spend 30 years as a teacher in the Levittown School District. His commitment to service continued as he founded the Italian Genealogy Group, inspired by a desire to uncover his family roots, and volunteered with the International Art Society, the Boy Scouts and the Plainview Family History Center.
Through his visit, students learned how Armand’s military background and deep love for his country inspired a lifetime of service, education and dedication to his community.
