Reading Around the Rockefeller Tree at Slocum

Ms. Mackin’s fourth grade class learned all about the history of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree through a series of engaging read-alouds. Central to their lesson was “Red and Lulu” by Matt Tavares, a heartwarming tale of two cardinals whose beloved evergreen tree is sent to New York City to become the iconic holiday landmark. One of the cardinals, Red, goes on an adventure through the city to find Lulu, who gets stuck in the tree. After analyzing the story’s structure and themes, students used their creative writing skills to rewrite the tale from Lulu’s perspective.
