RMS Seventh Graders Learn History Through Native American Games

In their social studies classes, seventh grade students at Ronkonkoma Middle School explored the recreational activities once played by Native American tribes. In addition to studying how different tribes adapted to their geographic regions, students examined the similarities and differences among athletic contests such as lacrosse and stickball, skill-based games like archery and hoop and pole, and games of chance such as guessing games. These traditional games served many purposes, from recreation and social bonding to developing survival skills and fulfilling spiritual or religious roles. Students participated in several of these activities, including lacrosse, field hockey, hoop and pole and foot races.
