Bohemia Fire Department teaches fire safety at John Pearl

In recognition of National Fire Prevention Month, the Bohemia Fire Department visited John Pearl Elementary to provide an educational fire safety experience for first through fifth grade students.
Throughout the visit, students engaged in discussions about essential fire safety practices such as checking smoke detectors and the importance of creating a family escape plan.
The highlight of the day was the fire department’s interactive simulation trailer, where fourth and fifth grade students experienced realistic fire safety scenarios in a controlled setting. On one side of the trailer, designed to mimic a bedroom, students witnessed simulated smoke entering under the door. Firefighters guided them through the proper steps to take in such a situation, checking the door for heat, staying low to avoid smoke and safely exiting through a window.
On the opposite side of the trailer, a kitchen set-up showed students what to do in case of an oven fire. The demonstration included how to safely call 911 and how to use a fire extinguisher. These experiences not only reinforced fire safety education but also helped students understand how to stay calm and act during an emergency.
