Mrs. Guastella’s first grade class at Edith L. Slocum Elementary has been diving into an important life lesson: the value of grit and perseverance when faced with challenges. Whether it’s tackling tricky math problems or mastering new vocabulary, these young learners are discovering that success often comes from staying determined and not giving up.

To celebrate their learning, Mrs. Guastella used artificial intelligence to help create a song titled, “You Just Have to Have Some Grit,” set to the familiar tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. Students also designed posters sharing a personal challenge they faced in first grade and how they worked through it. They proudly presented their posters and performed their song for Director of Student Services Dr. Joanne Pisani, sharing real-life examples of perseverance, like using strategies to solve difficult math problems or tapping out tough words using Secret Stories.
