Girls Volleyball Team Continues Winning Streak

The Connetquot High School girls volleyball team defeated Sachem North High School on Sept. 11 in three straight sets 25-13, 25-11 and 25-20. With this win under their belt, Connetquot improves to 3-0 in Suffolk County League II, while Sachem North falls to 0-2. During the match, Kiarra Roth had 10 kills and Julia Patsos had 15 digs in the home win.

Coach Justin Hertz’s success with the girls volleyball program at Connetquot spans a decade and includes two New York State championships. Last year’s T-Birds, despite having lost seven players who went on to play NCAA Division I, finished the season 13-2 with an invitation to the Suffolk County championships.

While the 2018-19 team did extremely well, considering the loss of so many players, including Connetquot’s first All-American MacKenzie Cole (Duke University), Coach Hertz and his 2019-20 team are determined to get back to that championship level.
Connetquot’s roster includes five experienced seniors, nine juniors, one sophomore and an impressive freshman by the name of Lauren Konzen. The winning tradition remains, and this year’s team is determined to improve over last year’s finish.

Girls Soccer Team Improves to 2-1 with Win Over William Floyd

The Connetquot High School Lady T-Birds soccer team kept visitors William Floyd High School scoreless in the first half and outscored them 2-0 in the second to earn the win, improving their season record to 2-1-1.

T-Birds Morgan Elliott and Kayla Valerioti each scored in the second half, while Olivia McNay and Valerioti provided an assist and Maddison Feraca contributed five saves against the opponent.

CHS Football Program Looks Forward to Playing in Division II

With their upcoming game on Friday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m. against Northport High School, Connetquot High School football coach Mike Hansen will begin his 17th season as head coach of the Thunderbirds. This season also marks the first time that the T-Birds will be playing at the Suffolk County Division II level. Despite the change, the football program is fully prepared for the season and up to the new challenge.

The T-Birds are led by quarterback Drew Guttieri (6’3”/215), Cole Bunicci (6’5”/225), Sean Schaller (6’/280), Jack McCarthy (6’3”/230) and Tyler Cordes (5’10”/195). Guttieri has already committed to attending NCAA Division I Stony Brook University in the fall of 2020. He is considered a powerhouse for passing the ball downfield, as well as running the ball for the T-Birds.

Bunicci was a major factor toward the team’s 6-3 record in 2018 due to his dual strengths running the ball and running pass patterns. Coach Hansen also claims that James Mastro (5’11”/175), the team’s fastest runner, will be an asset to the T-Birds this season.

Boys Soccer Team Comes Up Short Against Brentwood

Connetquot High School’s new boys soccer coach Francesco Herrera encouraged his players to come into the recent game against Brentwood High School knowing they were going to face one of the toughest opponents on Long Island. Brentwood led by a score of 2-0 in the first half, but despite Connetquot’s aggressive defense and excellent display of teamwork on offense, the visitors finished the game by a final score of 8-0.

The T-Birds played hard, and while Coach Herrera played his upperclassmen early, he also gave the younger players an opportunity to play against a talented team and improve their skills. The T-Birds’ overall record now stands at 0-3-1.

Goalies Kyle Monahan and Tyler Moore displayed some excellent feats of athleticism throughout the game, as they recorded nine combined saves against Brentwood.
