THROWBACK THURSDAY: Roaming the Red Planet

In early March, members of Connetquot’s C-Quest program were treated to an out-of-this-world activity. The students welcomed Tim Sarro, an astronomer with the Cradle of Aviation Museum, to Edward J. Bosti Elementary School for an interplanetary exhibition. Sarro taught the students about America’s successful exploration of space and gave them a chance to explore a topographical map of the surface of Mars. Students took turns playing the roles of rover, signaler and programmer, one student providing directions to a second student, who would then pass those directions to the blindfolded “rover” so that “specimens” could be collected. This unique opportunity afforded the students a sense of the complexity of NASA’s work.
