Karen Pitka’s fourth grade class and Stephanie Russo’s fifth grade class at Duffield Elementary School recently enhanced their literary skills through the “40 Book Challenge.”

Taking its roots from "The Book Whisperer" by Donalyn Miller, the initiative was established with the goal of having young learners read 40 books over the course of a year.

To keep them organized, the students were responsible for tracking their progress on a “genre graph.” They also recorded the titles and authors of the books they completed on a “book shelfie.”

According to Mrs. Pitka, the 40 Book Challenge is about challenging oneself as a reader to think outside of the box and make new and exciting reading discoveries along the way.
