Baseball Team’s Magical Season Comes to an End

The Connetquot High School baseball team ended its fantastic season after a showdown with Massapequa High School in the Long Island championship finals, hosted by St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue on June 8.

Massapequa High School, the current New York State AA championship team represented Nassau County, as Suffolk County champions Connetquot High School challenged for the Long Island title. In a nail-biting contest whose outcome would not be determined until the final frame, the large and enthusiastic crowd certainly got its money’s worth.

Connetquot scored a run in the second inning and four more in the third, giving the T-Birds an impressive 5-0 lead. Massapequa came back in the fifth with four runs of its own, cutting the deficit to one.  Connetquot scored again in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-4 lead into the sixth inning.

Not to be outdone, Massapequa came back again in the top of the sixth to score two more runs and tie the score at 6 going into the seventh inning. Nick Schwartz’ homer gave the visitors the lead, but Connetquot would have the last opportunity at bat. Connetquot managed to fill the bases in the bottom of the seventh, and with two outs John O’Connell stepped up to the plate. Massapequa’s pitcher fell behind O’Connell at 3-0, but followed that with strikes. O’Connell then laced the next pitch to deep right field, which could have produced the winning runs, but Massapequa’s Chris DeSouse chased the ball down and made the spectacular catch, ending the inning, giving Massapequa the 7-6 win and, ultimately, the Long Island championship.

Massapequa will meet the winner of the Shenendehowa v. Fayetteville-Manlius game at Binghamton University on Friday, June 14.

Connetquot finished the season 21-6 as Suffolk County League II champions, along with winning the Suffolk County AA championship. In coach Rob Burger’s first season as head coach, he took along an impressive 16-10 team and put together a championship-caliber “family” that made their community proud of their achievements. Congratulations to coach Burger and the Connetquot High School baseball team for a magical season!
