Baseball Team Achieves Successes in Postseason

The Connetquot High School baseball team continues to showcase its impressive talents as its season continues.

Before its most recent win against Longwood High School, the team improved its season record to 17-4, and advanced to the county AA semifinals with its 8-4 win over Sachem East High School. The T-Birds fought back from an early 4-2 deficit at home, to take the lead in the fourth inning with three runs, followed by an additional three runs in the fifth inning.

Matt Brown-Eiring went 3-3 with two RBIs, and Joe Zimmerman added a two-RBI base hit to give the T-Birds the lead over sixth-seeded Sachem East in its Suffolk AA quarterfinal win.

Derek Yalon scored two runs for Connetquot, while Matthew Goodis picked up the win, throwing 6 2/3 innings including five strikeouts. With this win under its belt, Connetquot advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament against Longwood High School.

First-year head baseball coach Rob Burger was impressed with his team’s defense in the field, as well as its character, coming from behind under such pressure.

In more recent news, the varsity baseball team improved its overall record to 18-4, and advanced to the second game in the best-of-three series against Longwood High School by outscoring the visitors 7-2.

During the game, Derek Yalon hit a two-run homer going 2-4 with three RBIs, while Alex Ungar went 3-3 with two RBIs and a triple. Connetquot took a first-inning, 2-0 lead, which Longwood just could not overcome. Additionally, Joe Savino pitched a complete game, with 11 strikeouts, to earn the win.

The winner of the best-of-three series between Longwood and the T-Birds will advance to the Suffolk County AA championship series, scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 1.

Connetquot High School Golfers Headed to the NYS Championships

Four Connetquot High School golfers recently qualified to compete in the New York State championship tournament on June 2-3.

Victoria D’Arcangelis and Justine Roccio finished eighth and 12th out of 104 Suffolk County golfers, thus qualifying to take part in the New York State championship tournament. Not to be outdone, brothers Kyle and Tyler Zere will represent Connetquot High School in the state tournament as well. Kyle finished eighth, while Tyler finished fifth in the Suffolk County tournament to qualify for the statewide competition.

Victoria and Justine will play at the Deerfield Golf & Country Club in Brockport, New York, while Kyle and Tyler will compete at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University.

Congratulations on another outstanding season, and best of luck in the New York State championships!

CHS Softball Season Comes to an End in Third Round of County Championship Tournament

The Connetquot High School’s varsity softball team, along with coach Michelle Goodwin, have impressed their fans and opponents all season long.

The team had no seniors and played four freshmen, an indication that this is both a team and program with its eyes to the future. During the season, the T-Birds surprised many experienced teams and qualified for the Suffolk County championships. However, that string of surprises and wins unfortunately came to an end in the third round of the countywide tournament with a loss to Sachem North High School.

Connetquot fell behind early, and just couldn’t get its rhythm for the remainder of the game. The T-Birds’ closed out its impressive season with an overall record of 13-8.

Congratulations to coach Goodwin and her T-Birds for all of their successes this season. This is a team of the future, and this season’s success will be a strong foundation to build upon in the coming years.
