Cheerleaders Successful at Recent Competition

On Saturday, Jan. 19, the district’s varsity cheerleading team hosted the Section XI championships at Connetquot High School, inviting 39 Suffolk County schools and varsity cheer programs to compete.

T-Bird coaches Kelly Unterweiser and Elizabeth Schlitt have been proud of their team’s achievements this season, and it didn’t disappoint during the recent competition, as it finished second among the 14 schools in the major division of competition. Needless to say, the T-Bird supporters on hand for the sold-out competition cheered and shouted their support for the student-athletes during their time spent showcasing their fantastic routine.

Leading up to the Section XI competition, Connetquot had placed first in the UCA Empire Regional at Nassau Community College on Dec. 2. The UCA champion earns an automatic bid to compete at the UCA National High School Cheerleading championship held in Orlando, Florida.
Additionally, on Dec. 8, the T-Birds placed first at the Suffolk County championships held at West Babylon High School, and the following day placed first at the UCA Northeast Pocono Regional.

“It has been an amazing start to the season, ladies and gentlemen, and the entire community is proud of what you have accomplished,” Coach Unterweiser said. “Keep up the hard work, and get those bags packed for Orlando!”

Boys Basketball Team Headed to the Playoffs

Thanks to its recent win against Riverhead High School on Jan. 23, the Connetquot High School boys basketball team successfully clinched a playoff berth, improving its overall record to 10-5, with an 8-3 League II record. This win marks Connetquot’s second consecutive bid to the Suffolk County championship tournament.

The T-Birds led in points throughout the game and held on tight as Riverhead attempted to cut into the lead going into the fourth quarter. Connetquot’s sharpshooting, 6’7” athlete Sean Andersen led both teams with 23 points to go along with his eight rebounds, which included two 3-point baskets. Also scoring in double figures for the T-Birds were Taevon Bazemore (19 points, eight assists and five rebounds), and Jaden Kealey (15). Rounding out the scoring for the home team were Matt Brown-Eiring (9), Emmanuel Mondesire (1) and Ryan Vaughn (1).

The Suffolk County Boys’ Basketball Playoffs are set to begin with outbracket games on Feb. 11, and the Suffolk County/Section XI champion will be determined on Feb. 27.

Good luck to coaches Matt Buderman, Keith Cussmano and Tim Trava, along with the 2018-2019 Connetquot High School boys basketball team!
