Celebrating Senior Night with a Victory

The Connetquot community celebrated the careers of its senior athletes Friday, Oct. 19, as the T-Bird seniors on the football team, cheerleading squad and the award-winning marching band were all recognized at the home of the Connetquot Thunderbirds. 

The Connetquot High School varsity football team’s 27-26 win gave the T-Birds a 6-1 record in Suffolk County Division I. The locals came from a 20-13 deficit after three quarters, to outscore Brentwood 14-6 in the last quarter for the win. 

Drew Guttieri threw the game-winning touchdown to Jared Pinto as time ran out for the one-point lead and the win. Additionally, Drew went 24-39 for 360 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Devon Danz had seven catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Tyler Cores had four catches for 89 yards, while John Dale made five catches for 38 yards and a touchdown.  Cole Bunicci also showcased his athleticism, as he caught six passes for 56 yards, rushed for 44 yards, intercepted a pass and led the T-Birds with 17 tackles. On the defensive end, Alex Szczepanski and Chris Danisi each had two sacks. The T-Birds currently rank third of 12 teams in Suffolk League I.

Congratulations to the Connetquot High School varsity football team on its exciting win against Brentwood High School. At the same time, congratulations and thank you to all of the graduating seniors recognized for their dedication to the athletic and music programs at Connetquot High School.

Girls Tennis Team Advances to Next Round of Playoffs

In addition to the excitement from qualifying for the 2018 Suffolk County playoffs, the Connetquot High School girls varsity tennis team was thrilled after its first-round win over Eastport-South Manor High School Oct. 18 by a final score of 4-3. With this win under its belt, the T-Birds will move onto the second round of the tournament.

Katerina Papandon defeated Madeline Perez 7-5, 6-3 in singles to clinch the win and earn a second-round match in the Suffolk County Division I tournament. In doubles, Katie Mills and Amy Hartman won 6-2, 6-2; Hannah Dunaske and Mackensie Gisler claimed victory with scores of 6-4, 6-3, as Elizabeth Fazzingo and Rebecca Schwartz won their doubles match 6-1, 6-0.

Connetquot looks forward to its next match as it gears up to play the undefeated Islip High School in the second round of the tournament.

Gymnastics Team Celebrates Big Win

The Connetquot High School gymnastics team recently celebrated Senior Night with flowers, gifts and an impressive win over West Islip High School by a score of 167.075 to West Islip’s 154. With this win under its belt, improving its overall record to 7-2, the T-Birds continue to march toward the county championships

Sarah Moussa placed first in the all-around with a score of 34.975, while Amanda Pisano placed second in the all-around with a 34.25. Sarah also finished first on the floor and beam with a 9.225 as well as a first-place finish on the bars, while Amanda was first on the vault with an outstanding score of 9.0.

Congratulations to the T-Birds on the impressive win, and a sincere thank-you to the graduating seniors for their dedication and the success of the district’s gymnastics program!

Girls Swimming and Diving Team Finds Success at Recent Meets

The Connetquot High School/East Islip High School girls’ swimming and diving team recently secured a second-place finish in the League I girls championship meet held at Sachem North High School on Oct. 20. The team also looks forward to the county championships taking place Nov. 3, along with state championships taking place Nov. 16 and 17.

Girls Soccer Season Comes to an End

The Connetquot High School girls varsity soccer team exceeded expectations, finishing the regular season with an impressive record of 6-4-4, and qualified for the Suffolk County Class AA playoff tournament on Oct. 22. 

Unfortunately, despite a large and supportive crowd, along with an outstanding defensive performance by goalie Emma Bunicci, the T-Birds’ season ended on the short end of a 1-0 score to Ward Melville High School.

Both teams played outstanding defense and went into the halftime break with a scoreless tie. Ward Melville scored the game’s only goal with 14 minutes left in the second half and will now face Sachem East High School in the quarterfinals. Connetquot made 12 impressive shots on goal.
