Weekly Sports Update - May 21-25, 2018

Connetquot High School Baseball Team Moves On to Semifinal Round

The Connetquot High School varsity baseball team recently outscored Bay Shore High School by a final score of 5-1 and advanced to the Suffolk County championship semifinal round. 

Connetquot High School’s Ciaran McGinnis struck out three in 5 1/3 innings and, with Matt Brown-Eiring’s relief, contributed to the team’s win. Derek Yalon went 2 for 4 at the plate and made a diving catch in the outfield, with the bases loaded, to end a Bay Shore rally and bring home the win. Jared Yalon went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two stolen bases. Matt Brown-Eiring earned two RBIs to help Connetquot improve its record to 16-8 as it moves on to the championship semifinals. 

The team will now face Eastport-South Manor High School in a best-of-three series to move on to the Suffolk County baseball finals. Good luck!


Connetquot High School Hosts Suffolk County ‘Division’ Track and Field Championships

The Suffolk County ‘Division’ Track and Field championships were held at Connetquot High School on May 21 and 23, featuring 50 Suffolk County track teams and hundreds of talented student-athletes competing in the annual convention organized by Connetquot High School track coach Jim Crowley III.

Connetquot’s Bryanna Holguin won the triple jump with a school record of 38’ 9 ¾. Bryanna ranks No. 2 in all of New York State in the triple jump event, as her performance surpassed the current New York State No. 1 triple jumper. 

Connetquot’s 4x100-meter relay team of Emily Fieseler, Janelle Foston, Ali Hardie and Bryanna Holguin won their heat in a season-best time of 51.29. Connetquot’s pole vaulters Ali Hardie and Emily Pfeuffer both cleared 8’ 6” and finished fifth and sixth, respectively. 

As the Suffolk County ‘Division’ Track and Field championships came to an end on May 23, Coach Crowley was proud to list the following Connetquot High School highlights:

-       1,500-meter racewalk: third place – Serena Roopnarine; fourth place – Kianna Plummer
-       Pentathlon: sixth place – Nia Callaway
-       High jump: sixth place – Bryanna Holguin
-       2000-meter steeplechase: fifth place – Katie Iocca
-       4x100 relay: fourth place – Emily Fieseler, Janelle Foston, Ali Hardie, Bryanna Holguin
-       4x800 relay: fifth place – Deanna Beattie, Katie Iocca, Emily Karl, Melanie Walsh


Boys Tennis Team Ends Season in Second Round of Suffolk County Championships

The Connetquot High School boys tennis team came into the second round of the Suffolk County championship tournament with visible confidence. Although Connetquot played with great skill during their games, their season was ended by Ward Melville High School by a 7-0 decision.

Coach Ryan Cavanagh is proud of his team and believes that this young group will show great promise in the near future. Coach Cavanagh would like to thank all the players, managers and parents for their support this season. He congratulated them on making the second round of the Suffolk County championship tournament and looks forward to working with them again next season.


Connetquot High School Boys Lacrosse Season Ends in Semifinals

On May 24, the Connetquot High School boys lacrosse team traveled to Islip High School to take on the No. 1 seeded Ward Melville High School in the semifinals of the Suffolk County championship tournament. Despite its valiant efforts, the T-Birds’ season came to an end as the Patriots outscored Connetquot by a score of 14-8.

Although disappointed with the night’s outcome, the team should be proud of what it accomplished this season. An entire section of the Islip High School stadium gave it a standing ovation at the conclusion of the game. Congratulations to the team members and coaching staff on an outstanding boys lacrosse season!
