In tandem with their robust science curriculum, members of the Connetquot High School Animal Conservation Club recently learned how the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society assists animals in need.
With the assistance of Kimberly Durham and Hannah Winslow of the Hampton Bays-based nonprofit organization, the students observed and took part in a dissection of a female gray seal to learn about the animal and find new ways to prevent tragedies throughout the marine ecosystems.
“After a lengthy dissection by the students and Mrs. Durham, it was determined that the seal suffered from pneumonia and parasites, which caused malnutrition,” said science teacher Lori Forgione.
The mission of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society includes cleaning up marine debris and making an effort to positively impact the marine environment. For further information on their efforts, please visit www.amseas.org.
