Victory at the Joe Brandi Invitational Relay

More than 2,000 female high school athletes from 38 schools took part in the 14th annual Joe Brandi Invitational Relay held at Connetquot High School on the weekend of April 20.

A variety of track and field events were scheduled for the two days of competition, as the teams began to compete on Friday night and continued throughout the Saturday morning and afternoon sessions.

Connetquot won the two-day competition with a total score of 189 points, far ahead of the 123 points scored by the second-place finisher. Student-athlete Bryanna Holguin led the way with a school record in the triple jump with a distance of 38 feet, 8 inches, which is the best performance in New York State this season thus far.

Additional outstanding Connetquot performances at the Joe Brandi Invitational included the triple jump with Bryanna Holguin and Janelle Foston, the 1500-meter racewalk with Serena Roopnarine and Kianna Plummer and the 4x1600-meter relay with Deanna Beattie, Emily Thornton, Isabella Cottone and Katie Iocca.

Congratulations to the winners and all of the competitors for an excellent example of athleticism and sportsmanship.

Joe Brandi is a long-time Connetquot Central School District teacher and track and field coach, who was again on hand to encourage the competitors.

Softball Team Defeats Bay Shore High School

The Connetquot High School varsity softball team defeated the visiting Bay Shore High School team on April 23 by a final score of 5-4 and improved its overall record to 5-3 in doing so.

Alexis Smith’s single brought home Jaclyn Kateridge to break the tie, as Jaclyn slid home, avoiding the tag and preserving the run, which contributed toward the team’s win.

Additionally, Juliana Prescia bunted in the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied at 4-4, moving runners to second and third along the way.

The T-Birds currently stand at third place in League II and look forward to the rest of the season.
