Taking learning beyond the walls of the classroom, Karen Pitka’s fourth-grade class at Duffield Elementary School recently embarked on a “virtual field trip” hosted by Lauren Tarshis, author of the “I Survived” historical fiction series.
The virtual field trip, “Beyond the Battlefield,” features a highly engaging video segment in which Tarshis takes both students and teachers alike behind the scenes of the new American Revolution Museum in Philadelphia. Students were able to see historical treasures such as canteens and muskets, meet historians and hear stories of the young people who were a part of America’s fight for independence.
“The goal of this virtual field trip was to help bring this highly important time in history to life for students and open new doors of curiosity,” said Mrs. Pitka. “My fourth-grade historians highly enjoyed seeing one of their favorite authors and are eager to learn more about the American Revolution during social studies and English language arts.”
