Connetquot High School juniors and science research students Christopher Picchiello and Giavana Prucha spent a week this summer conducting scientific experiments and furthering their scientific knowledge at Brookhaven National Lab’s National Synchrotron Light Source-II.

After learning about the facility’s capabilities through a series of lectures by scientists from NSLS-II and SUNY Stony Brook, the students gained hands-on experience in the process of protein crystallization and x-ray crystallography. By week’s end, they were able to harvest protein crystals and use both the AMX and FMX beamlines to produce high resolution diffraction patterns. These images were then processed by the students using advanced software to create 3-D images of the proteins as they bound different ligands.

The students will now be able to use their knowledge and experiences to develop proposals to submit to Brookhaven National Lab’s National Synchrotron Light Source-II to access time to use these beamlines for their future research projects.
