After learning about the basics of recycling in their classroom, Slocum Elementary School second-graders gained a deeper understanding about the process when Danielle Wynn, a recycling educator from the Islip Town Department of Environmental Control, visited the building.

During the in-school program, Ms. Wynn explained to the students the importance of the Islip Town We Recycle America Proudly program, the schedule for collection, and the types of materials able to be recycled. Her presentation also included a recycling film and a demonstration on how students could make their own paper by using scraps, water, food coloring, glitter and a blender. Lastly, students learned how many items they use each day, including T-shirts, pencils, tote bags and footwear, are made using recycled materials.
