Earlier this year, Connetquot High School ninth-grader Amanda Perrone was one of only 86 students on Long Island to be selected as a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics. This February, she earned a letter of congratulations for the honor from New York State Sen. Thomas D. Croci, a Connetquot alumnus.

The Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students selected Amanda based on her superior performance after she competed against 600 of the top-ranked students nominated from Long Island school districts. As part of her participation, she will spend 60 hours in class over the course of 20 Saturday mornings studying mathematical topics such as algebra, geometry, discrete math and number theory, as well as those not included in the standard course of study.
