Kindergarten and first-grade students in Duffield Elementary School were recently visited by Recycling Educator Danielle Wynn, from the Islip Town Department of Environmental Control, for a lesson on the environmental benefits of recycling.

Ms. Wynn demonstrated to students how they could make their own paper by using scraps, water, food coloring, glitter and a blender. Additionally, she displayed pencils made from recycled paper, and T-shirts fashioned from recycled plastic.

“With the recent implementation of the Leader in Me program at Duffield, we hope to empower students to take a leadership role in helping our school community, and the community at large,” said fifth-grade teacher Katie Clare, who arranged for the visit to the school. “Students will acquire a strong knowledge base that will help us kick-start our very own in-house recycling center at Duffield.”
