In early March, students, parents, teachers and administrators gathered at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School for their annual Family Literacy Night. The event was coordinated by the school’s reading teachers, Pat Dow, April Oquendo and Jackie Sackoor, and supported by the PTA, who ran an evening book fair and provided snacks, drinks and decoration.
This year, more than 80 students participated in the reading fair, creating trifold display boards related to their choice of fiction or nonfiction books. The projects required incorporating specific elements and allowed students to demonstrate their knowledge of the books and their creativity during presentations to a panel of judges. There were 40 first, second and third place winners from grades K-5, and an additional 17 students received honorable mentions.
